To the delegates of the 8th Asia Pacific Conference on Tobacco or Health:

On behalf of Health Canada, I would like to express my pleasure that Canada’s blue ribbon campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of second-hand smoke is now adopted in Japan by the I Love Clean Air organization.

The blue ribbon is worn as a symbol of clean air free of tobacco smoke and to raise awareness of the hazards of being exposed to second-hand smoke. A group of students from Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, launched the blue ribbon campaign for Canada’s National Non Smoking Week in 1999. One year later, the blue ribbon was used province-wide in British Columbia, and was adopted as a Canada-wide program in May 2001.

Since then, the blue ribbon campaign has continued to be a symbol of clean air and we are pleased that the campaign has been adopted in Japan. We are also hopeful that other countries will also adopt the blue ribbon as a symbol of second-hand smoke awareness and that it would lead to an increased understanding of the hazards of being exposed to second-hand smoke.

Yours very truly,
敬白
